At once: provocation and reflection - José Leonilson (1957-1993) and Hudinilson Jr (1957-2013)
We are thrilled to announce Leonilson (1957-1993) and Hudinilson Jr. (1957-2013)for Frieze New York 2022. This unprecedented project proposes a dialogue between these two emblematic artists who were provocative figures in the contemporary art scene in Brazil between 80’s and 90’s due to their engagement with political activism, aesthetic research and personal experiences.
From the same generation, Hudinilson Jr and Leonilson promoted relevant discussions around homoaffectivity, discrimination and the tragedy of HIV/AIDS epidemic, but more than this, the poetics of life and its feelings expressed by their works. Both artists not only contributed to new artistic practices in Brazil, but also encouraged through their vulnerabilities to experience art as the poetry of life.
In collaboration with Galeria Jaqueline Martiins, this unique project can be visited from 18th to 22nd May at Frieze New York 2022.
