On March 30, Galeria Marília Razuk opens the exhibition “Correlações entre variáveis aleatórias: Julio Plaza e Nelson Leirner” (Correlations between random variables: Julio Plaza and Nelson Leirner), which brings together these great Brazilian artists.

With enigmatic associations in the selection of 15 works in confrontation and a unique presentation, curator Inês Raphaelian risks establishing random correlations between the critical thinking of the two artists. Both Julio andNelson are key names to understand Brazilian art. One highlight is the installation “As Meninas ou Os Meninos” [The Girls or the Boys], by Julio Plaza, done in 1977 at the Arte Global Gallery in São Paulo and now adapted to the exhibition space of Galeria Marília Razuk, there is a direct reference to a work by Velázquez from 1656 which opens a discussion on the pictorial space, the observer and the observed. Julio expertly shows the complexity of the theme in a game of photographic images.

Nelson Leirner, appropriating classical works and characters from pop/mass culture with intelligence and irony, brings forth recurring subjects in the art market and status quo by making collages of stickers of kids’ characters on the Sotheby’s catalogue or on traditional world maps. The curating also presents unseen works to the public, offered by a private collection: three paintings of the “neo hexagramas” [neo hexagrams] of the “I Ching Change”, by JulioPlaza, in reference to the eponymous book by the artist.
